Snow Forecast for Canterbury High Country and Plains:
A cold southwesterly airflow blows over New Zealand and a trough within this flow will move over the South Island on Sunday, bringing an increase in atmospheric energy and a drop in temperatures. This could result in a brief period of snow to low levels for Canterbury.
Mostly dry until Sunday.
On Sunday, a period of snow showers is likely during the daylight hours, with accumulations of 3-5cm possible above 200m, and maybe a few cm below 200m. As the snow is likely to fall as showers, accumulations are more likely to be lesser depths than most snow events, but may fall to low levels. Winds should stay light, and showers clear on Sunday evening.
There may be some disruption to mountain passes, roads on Banks Peninsula and the Port Hills, and inland roads above about 200m.
Low level snow is likely late on Saturday and early Sunday in Southland and Otago, with chance of some heavy falls.
